Last week, a neglected pit bull was confiscated from its owner in order to receive immediate medical attention. After being transported to the Pearl River County SPCA, multiple employees at the shelter gave the dog an unfavorable chance of survival.
However, with the help of the Picayune Veterinary Clinic, the pit bull is recovering, but still has a long road before she can make a full recovery.
PRC SPCA President Judy Wheaton said the pit bull has a couple of medical issues that are currently being evaluated by the Picayune Veterinary Clinic to determine how they could affect the dog’s quality of life.
Those issues include a deep ear infection and a structural problem with the dog’s shoulder.
When the pit bull was first taken to the SPCA, it could barely support its own weight and was malnourished. A week later, the dog has made positive strides and is walking, wagging its tail and showing increased energy during mealtime.
Pearl River County Animal Control Officer Danny Joe Slade, who responded to the initial report of the mistreated pit bull, gave the owner a week to improve how he or she cared for the other dogs. After checking on the pets, Slade said he saw a lot of progress.
Slade said he will continue to frequently check in on the owner and the dogs to ensure they are obeying the leash law and taking proper care of their animals.

Slade declined to name the owner of the dog.
