Picayune School Board handles routine matters

Routine business was handled during Tuesday’s meeting of the Picayune School Board of Trustees.
During discussion of 16th section matters, District Finance Director Lisa Persick was asked about several cancellations of 16 section lease agreements. Persick said the agreement between the District and the renter would be cancelled if the renter failed to pay the taxes, or did not continue their payment plan.
For the most part the District tries to work with the renters, so if the taxes are paid or payment plan is caught up, the cancellation is rescinded, Persick said. Superintendent Dean Shaw said that the staff employ every avenue to avoid having to evict people from homes on 16th section land.
On a side note, Persick said that of the District’s more than $17 million budget, last year’s expenses came in $192 under budget.
In a separate matter, the Board accepted several donations, one of which is from former student and varsity football player Lorenzo Breland. Shaw said that for the past seven years the Picayune Memorial High School alumnus has donated school supplies to local families. Assistant Superintendent Brent Harrell said the school supply giveaway event will be held Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at the South Side Elementary Caffetorium.
The next meeting of the Board will be held Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
