After reporting a residential burglary at their home, two Picayune residents were arrested for allegedly growing marijuana.
According to a release from the Picayune Police Department, the arrests took place on June 15, when narcotics detectives were conducting a follow up investigation into a report of a residential burglary at 2315 East Canal St. While 25-year-old Jeremy Cyntear Turner, a resident of that address, was providing a report of the burglary, an investigator went to the home, Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said.
When the investigator knocked on the door, Demi Marie LeFleur, 22, answered. While speaking with LeFleur, the investigator noticed the odor of marijuana and saw a black tent in the home, the release states.
Further investigation into the tent found several pieces of a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana, multiple lights, heating elements and fans inside the tent. The release states that the items found in the tent are commonly used to grow marijuana.
During a subsequent search of the home, the detective found bags of a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana, multiple items of paraphernalia used to grow the plant, a book entitled “Growing Marijuana: How to Plant, Cultivate and Harvest Your own Weed” and several bags of fertilizer, the release states.
A bag of a substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine, which was later determined to be made from joint support powder for horses, was also found in the home, the release states. Further investigation determined LeFleur and Turner manufactured the counterfeit controlled substance and were selling it as crystal methamphetamine, the release states.
LeFleur was arrested at the home for cultivation of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school or church, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1,500 feet of a school or church, possession of paraphernalia and felony possession of a controlled substance.
Turner was arrested at the Picayune Criminal Justice Center while providing statements about the burglary, Magri said. Based on the findings at the home, Turner was arrested for cultivation of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school or church, two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1, 500 feet of school or church, possession of a counterfeit controlled substance with intent to distribute within 1,500 feet of a school or church, felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia, the release states.
