A Pearl River County man was arrested for absconding after he removed his ankle bracelet and left the state.
Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison said 42-year-old Charles Rohrbacker, of 33 Easy St., allegedly cut the monitoring bracelet from his ankle before leaving the state in an attempt to elude capture. After he left, the department began receiving information from the community that he would return to the county from time to time and stay with 26-year-old Kayla Stapleton at a home located at 298 Pea Ridge Road.
Based on that information, investigators went to the home on June 15, in an attempt to locate Rohrbacker. Allison said that when they knocked on the door, Stapleton answered, but said Rohrbacker was not there.
She told the investigators that he had not been staying at the home with her and she hadn’t seen him. However, when they searched the home, Rohrbacker was discovered inside, hiding in a piece of furniture described as an entertainment center, Allison said.
Rohrbacker was taken into custody at that time without incident for absconding and a hold with drug court. Allison said he is being held at the Pearl River County jail without bond until a hearing can be held. As the investigation into the case continues, Rohrbacker could face additional charges, Allison said.
A check into Stapleton’s record found she was wanted by the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department for trespassing, stalking, and petit larceny warrants. She also had a hold on her by the Picayune Police Department for an unrelated warrant, Allison said.
An investigation into Stapleton’s involvement in the case is ongoing and she could face the additional offense of hindering prosecution, Allison said.
