To help defer the cost of providing medical care to several foster dogs with heartworms, Animal Adoption Society Inc. will hold a fundraiser Saturday at Jack Read Park.
Vice President Suzette Serio said the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature a number of items for sale and items to be raffled off.
Items for sale will include crafts, homemade dog treats, dog toys, and food. Serio said a variety of dog toys will be offered at a discount.
Raffle tickets for prize baskets will be available for $1 apiece or six for $5.
Red beans and rice from Copelands will be on sale for $2 a bowl, and attendees can also purchase drinks, pickles and baked goods.
Serio said the homemade dog treats include natural ingredients such as bananas, peanut butter, whole-wheat flour and applesauce.
“I’ve tasted it to see what it tastes like and it was very bland, but the dogs love it,” Serio said.
Five dogs currently up for adoption will be at the event, and weather permitting Serio said the organization might bring some cats.
Participants can also register their pet in the costume contest for a chance to win a gift card from a local business. Prizes will be issued for first through third place. Homemade crafts and a variety of other items, including sterling silver jewelry, will be for sale as well.
Animal Adoption Society Inc. was formed in 1994 in St. Bernard Parish, but when a number of members relocated to Pearl River County after Hurricane Katrina, the organization brought their services here as well. Now, the organization operates in both states, Serio said. The group’s efforts focus on rescuing animals, either from shelters or strays, and finding foster homes until a forever home is found.
Currently, the organization cares for five dogs with heartworms. Saturday’s event will raise funds to pay for the necessary medical care so they can find forever homes.
