Minor bridge failure causes multi-vehicle accident

A faulty bridge component caused a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 59 Friday evening near Lumberton.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Chase Elkins said the accident occurred that day just before 6 p.m. when a piece of angle iron that connects the asphalt of the roadway to the concrete of the bridge dislodged.
When the component came loose, it raised enough to catch a passing vehicle. Elkins said, in total, five vehicles were involved in the accident, but no major injuries were reported.
The problem has since been repaired by Mississippi Department of Transportation crew members.
