The Margaret Reed Crosby Memorial Library and its members took a step into the digital world Wednesday to learn the basics of Facebook for personal use and as a potential career path.
Monet Kees, a Mississippi State University extension agent, held the Facebook Frenzy seminar to demonstrate how to use Facebook and what it has to offer.
“This seminar is not geared toward the older generations. You would be surprised by all the younger people that still don’t know all the things they can do on Facebook,” Kees said, who has been using Facebook since 2006.
Over 1.8 billion people actively use Facebook, she said. However, a majority of them do not keep up with all the new features Facebook offers, like reaction emojis, Facebook stories and Facebook live.
But the number one thing Kees wanted to teach participants was how to keep profiles protected.
“People might not want all of their information out there, but still want people to see some stuff,” she said. “Facebook was created to be open and sociable, but it is good to remember that you do have access to numerous privacy settings that are constantly updating,” she said.
Because of social media, new jobs were created with the sole responsibility of maintaining and updating social media pages for family owned businesses and large corporations. These entry-level jobs are a great way to get a foot in the door of a desired company and begin a career while gaining experience, Kees said.
“Knowing the basics is important for any job. If kids want to go into business, knowing the basics of Facebook should definitely be a priority because it is something that could eventually become very useful and it is a great way to profit from experience early on in one’s career,” Kees said.
