Goodyear Baptist Church to open Picayune Farmers Market

Goodyear Baptist Church is sowing seeds for a new farmers market in the south end of Pearl River County.
The church’s ministry is organizing a bimonthly market for local vendors to sell goods to the community, event organizer Donna Wise said.
“This is something we’ve been thinking about, with the county as big as it is, being able to service both ends of the county is possible because we do have a lot of local people that do grow their vegetables,” Wise said.
What started as a desire from the church’s pastor to do something for the community to promote local businesses has since stirred interest from those on the south end of the county, she said.
Wise said one of the aims of the market is to bring people together and build relationships within the community.
From homegrown to homemade items, everything sold at the market will come from local vendors, Wise said.
“We’ve had people interested in selling pottery, stained glass, crochet, vegetables, honey, canned goods and some plants,” she said.
From April 22 until October, the market will be held in the church parking lot from 8 to 11 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month, Wise said.
A packet of information covering guidelines and how to participate is available at the church office, 2710 Highway 43 South, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
That packet will also be posted on the church’s website and the market Facebook page at Picayune Farmers Market at GBC.
Participants are required to follow Mississippi cottage laws, Wise said.
