Hart plans county cleanup day

Pearl River County District I Supervisor Donald Hart is planning a county-wide cleanup day for March 25.
After receiving multiple complaints about the litter problem in Pearl River County, Hart decided to organize the event as a way to not only clean up litter that is already in the county, but also create awareness about the problem to hopefully prevent it from continuing in the future, he said.
“I’ve been getting a lot of good feedback from the public; a lot of people are wanting to help out,” Hart said. “A lot of people are already picking up trash around their houses.”
During Wednesday’s Board meeting, Hart asked the Board to consider purchasing florescent vests, gloves and bags for the event.
From his previous experience in picking up litter, District IV Supervisor Farron Moeller said gloves are definitely needed.
The Board took no action on the matter, but said it will discuss the purchase of cleanup materials at the next meeting on March 6.
During the Feb. 6 Board meeting, each supervisor was given a trash picker to clean up litter in their own neighborhoods, previous coverage states.
Board Vice President Hudson Holliday said he has filled one bag of garbage for every quarter of a mile while cleaning his own neighborhood. The area stayed fairly clean afterward, he said.
Hart said he has noticed most litter accumulates around turns in the road and in isolated places, leading him to believe it’s not accidental.
Board President Sandy Kane Smith said the Board should also encourage those who cannot attend the event on March 25 to pick up litter in their neighborhoods when they can. District II Supervisor Malcolm Perry said he would like to coordinate with litter crews from the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department to help during the event.
Interested parties are asked to contact Hart at 601-528-3984 or dhart@pearlrivercounty.net. Exact cleanup locations are being set.
