Early Friday morning, the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department entered into a 10-mile pursuit after observing a vehicle being driven in a reckless manner on Highway 11.
At 1:42 a.m., deputies observed the vehicle, driven by Robert Doran, 49, of Shiveley Lane in Poplarville, traveling south on Highway 11 near Sones Chapel Road with its hazard lights on and swerving in both lanes of traffic, Capt. Joe Quave said.
Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop for the public’s safety, at which time Doran began waving a flashlight inside the vehicle, increasing his speed and driving more erratically, Quave said.
Deputies set up spike strips ahead of Doran’s vehicle, while he began to drive in the opposite lane and run on and off the road, Quave said.
The spike strips disabled the vehicle’s two front tires, but Doran continued driving, Quave said.
As Doran approached the city limits of Picayune, Picayune Police Department officers deployed a second set of spike strips at Highway 43 North and Highway 11, Quave said.
Again, Doran continued south after hitting the second set of strips, and started swerving toward patrol cars before pulling onto Carter Street where the vehicle came to a stop, Quave said.
Doran refused to exit the vehicle after multiple commands, but ultimately unlocked the door and was pulled from the vehicle, where he struggled with deputies before being taken into custody, Quave said.
Doran was arrested for felony fleeing, reckless driving, careless driving, no proof of insurance, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and improper out of state tag.
Quave said deputies did not report whether Doran appeared to be under the influence. It’s unclear why Doran was driving in such a reckless manner.
He is being held in the county jail on a $3,500 bond for all offenses except for felony fleeing. Quave said the bond for felony fleeing was not set at press time Friday.
