During Monday’s Pearl River County School Board meeting, a new face joined the Board of Trustees.
Seth Orgeron, student council president for Pearl River Central High School, is now serving as the Board’s first Student Representative, a position established by the Board of Trustees during the Dec. 8 meeting.
The Student Representative is given a special tab on the Board’s monthly agenda to give the students in the district a bigger voice, previous coverage states.
In Orgeron’s first report, he recognized the PRC High School Dance Team and gave updates on all the district’s schools. The dance team placed first in the Jazz and Pom large divisions during the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s statewide dance competition.
Multiple representatives of the dance team spoke on behalf of the squad, describing the arduous preparation they endured, beginning in the summer.
Last year, the Blue Angels dance team earned first place in the Pom division in the competition. This year marks the fourth consecutive year the team won a state title in at least one category, Sadie Penton, dance team coach, said.
Also, the high school’s cheer team received second place during the MHSAA state competition and was recognized by Orgeron during his report.
At PRC High School, 126 students were present every day during the months of October and November, Orgeron said.
At the Middle School, the 2015-16 students—who are now in seventh, eighth and ninth grades—“showed phenomenal growth in statewide math testing and gave PRCMS an A rank,” Orgeron said.
Approximately 98 percent of the endeavor students at PRCMS increased their fall exam score in one or more areas, compared to last year’s results.
At the Pearl River Central Upper Elementary, 162 students made the Superintendent’s List for academics and 256 students made the Principal’s List. Orgeron said 56 Upper Elementary students had perfect attendance in the first half of the year and 590 students had such good behavior that disciplinary action was not required.
Finally, at the Pearl River Central Lower Elementary, 74 students had perfect attendance throughout the first semester and 126 students made straight A’s in all subjects, Orgeron said.
