On Wednesday, Dec. 14, the Poplarville Police Department was involved in an hour-long car chase through three counties in pursuit of a Poplarville man on probation.

At about 1:50 p.m. that day, Poplarville Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a blue Dodge Ram for failing to use a turn signal on Todd Street in Poplarville, Chief Butch Raby said.

Officers identified the driver as Trevor R. Sones, 24, of Poplarville, Raby said.

When Sones was asked to step out of the vehicle, he fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed, Raby said.

Two passengers, later identified as his wife Eden D. Sones, 26, and Dallas Lang, 21, of Poplarville, were also in the vehicle, Raby said.

Officers began a pursuit that went through the city of Poplarville and on White Sand Road, at which time the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department joined the chase, Raby said.

Officers attemptrf to stop the vehicle with spike strips, but Trevor Sones avoided them by driving through the ditch, Raby said.

The high-speed chase continued onto Highway 43 N into Marion County, at which time the Marion County Sheriff’s Department also joined the pursuit, Raby said.

A Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries truck attempted to stop Trevor Sones, but was forced to leave the roadway to avoid a head-on collision, Raby said.

Trevor Sones eluded police for 57 minutes while driving through parts of Marion and Lamar County until entering Marion County again where he eventually lost control of the vehicle on a dirt road, striking a tree, Raby said.

Trevor Sones fled the vehicle on foot, entering into a heavily wooded area where police attempted to locate the suspect, Raby said.

Officers were later able to make contact with Trevor Sones after he called his wife’s cellphone, at which time officers tried to coax him out of the woods, Raby said.

Those initial attempts were unsuccessful but contact with Trevor Sones was continued for several days in an attempt to persuade the suspect to turn himself in, Raby said.

A search of the vehicle found a rifle inside and a check of Trevor Sones’ record determined he was on probation at the time of the chase.

Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, Trevor Sones made contact with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department and turned himself in without incident, Raby said.

A combination of charges from the Poplarville Police and Pearl River County Sheriff’s departments include possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony eluding of law enforcement, two counts of resisting arrest, reckless driving, no proof of insurance, possession of beer/wine in a dry county, failure to comply with requests of officer and probation violations, jail records state.

The passengers were not arrested, Raby said.

No injuries were sustained during the chase, he said.

Trevor Sones is being held at the Pearl River County jail.
