Women continue leaving home for ISIS

Last year, several young women traveling to Syria to join the extremist regime ISIS started making headlines.

The latest case centers on three British teenagers who went missing Tuesday. Authorities believe them to be en route to Syria, which is controlled by ISIS, according to CNN.

The girls’ names are Shamima Begum, who’s believed to be traveling under the name Aklima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana. The third girls name wasn’t released at the request of her family, according to CNN.

Unfortunately, these girls aren’t the first ones to attempt a trip to Syria to join ISIS forces.

Last year in the U.S., three teenage girls from Colorado were on their way to Syria before authorities caught them at an airport in Germany, according to NBC News.

According to the news source, the teens chatted online with an ISIS militant recruiter prior to making travel arrangements.

Another teenage girl from Colorado attempted to make her way to Syria before being arrested at Denver International Airport, CNN reported. According to the news source, the teen told authorities she planned on becoming an ISIS bride.

The question is, what are ISIS recruits telling these young women to make them travel from their safe homes to dangerous territory?

According to Reuters, ISIS is recruiting women to bear children and become fighters.

It’s truly upsetting to witness these young women sacrifice their lives so freely and join an organization that engages in violence.

The women who have attempted to or successfully joined ISIS tend to be between the ages of 16 and 24 and many are college graduates, according to The Guardian.

While there isn’t a specific reason as to why these women want to join ISIS, it could be because they’re young and naïve, easily manipulated or somehow believe they’re fighting for the right cause.

Whatever the case may be, it’s disheartening to see these women give up their lives for lives of violence and continue a trend that needs to be stopped.
