The Poplarville Fire Department will offer a training course for volunteer firefighters beginning in March.

Capt. Justin Miller and Capt. Johnson Head will teach a certified volunteer firefighter level two course. Miller said last year they taught the level one volunteer firefighter course.

“This level two course is for certified volunteer firefighters. It will take them from their basic level and expand their skills to help them better understand the total outlook and big picture on fire rescue scenes,” Miller said. “It will also give them the up-to-date skills necessary to become level two certified.”

This course is part of the Mississippi State Fire Academy’s outreach effort to train local volunteer firefighters, Miller said.

The course will go over code enforcement as well as offer real-life scenarios to train participants on rescuing victims and fellow firefighters during an emergency, Miller said.

“So far we’ve got interested parties from the Carriere Fire Department, several from Poplarville, and other local departments,” Miller said. “It’s not too late to sign up.”

Volunteer firefighters interested in the course can contact Miller at (601) 795-2200 or sign up in person at the Poplarville Fire Department located at 1390 S. Main St.

The course begins on Monday, March 2 and will run on select days through Thursday, April 30.
