The Poplarville Board of Aldermen met Monday and discussed a city wide cleanup program and an important message from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Laurie Lombardino is one of Poplarville’s newest residents and is interested in working with city leaders regarding the creation of a program to ensure Poplarville remains litter free.
Poplarville Mayor Brad Necaise said he wants to take part in the Keep America Beautiful campaign.
“I would like to organize a committee, recruit volunteers and speak to local business owners and community clubs about taking part in a cleanup program,” Lombardino said.
The board agreed to meet with Lombardino next week to discuss the collaboration.
During his departmental report, Poplarville Police Chief Charlie Fazende informed the board about a letter he received from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations.
“HSI has a program that is dedicated to protecting victims and witnesses against criminal aliens,” Fazende said. “It’s called the Victim Notification program and it informs victims of a criminal alien’s release from custody.”
According to the letter, HSI is asking the police department to inform victims and witnesses in the area about the program.

In other action the board approved:
–– Moving forward with cleanup at the following derelict properties: 111 Poplar Drive, 108 Camellia Drive and National Organization for Women located on Main Street.
–– Adopting the proclamation declaring March as American Red Cross month.
–– A $7,450 budget amendment to the downtown Wi-Fi project.
–– A Waste Management contract for property cleanup and debris haul away for $32 a ton.
–– The appointment of Chemin Pitre to the planning commission.
–– The appointment of Chandler Richardson to full-time police officer with the Poplarville Police Department.
The board’s next meeting will be held on March 3 at 5 p.m. in the board chambers at City Hall.
