Love your child no matter what

Now that I’ve been married for more than a year, family and friends have been asking the same question, “When are you going to have a baby?”
I don’t know why they are trying to rush parenthood, my husband and I are perfectly content spoiling my little nephew.
I don’t know what the future will hold, but right now we are happy.
But, however, the thought of motherhood has been on my mind lately after reading a horrifying story about an Armenian mother who abandoned her child.
According to news outlets, Ruzanna Badalyan gave birth to a son with Down syndrome. Apparently, it is common in Armenia for parents to abandon children born with disabilities.
That has got to be one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever heard.
Not only did Ruzanna abandon her child, she also divorced her husband, Forrest, because he wanted to keep and raise his son, Leo.
I do not know what it’s like to have children, nor can I even imagine the tremendous task of raising one born with intellectual disabilities, but I would never give a child up because of a handicap.
It might be a hard road, but I know it would also be dotted with many rewards and milestones.
I don’t know what it’s like to raise a child in Armenia, but according to news outlets, it’s often difficult to find support for children with disabilities in that country.
This is one of those times where I am glad to be a United States citizen. In this area, there are many options for parents of adults with intellectual disabilities including Bridgeway and Brandi’s Hope.
It’s great to live in a place where we, for the most part, love and care for those who are born with disabilities.
I must give kudos to Leo’s dad, who has plans to raise his own son in New Zealand.
