Hot weather is right around the corner and your kids will be begging for a fun way to cool off in the summer heat.
Sure, the warmth of summer is months out, and all you can think about is how the chill of winter will be with us for a while.
But some participants in the Partners for Pearl River County Leadership program are looking ahead to the not so distant future.
They have come up with an idea to raise funds to allow the city of Picayune to build their own splash pad at the ever-popular Friendship Park.
While the splash pad’s exact location in the park has not been determined, people are already excited at the proposition of having a local place to take their children to frolic in the water.
The best part is this new feature will not entail the use of city taxpayer dollars; instead a series of fundraisers held by Leadership program participants will take care of that.
Once completed, the city will be responsible for supplying water to the new park feature and providing maintenance.
City officials have already developed a plan to minimize the expense, which was described as “negligible”.
By bypassing the use of a treatment system, the only expense the city would incur is water usage. The best part is that the city already generates its own treated water supply.
However, the possibility of bacterial contamination was brought up at Tuesday’s meeting.
But we are certain city officials will put their collective heads together to come up with a solution to the only foreseen hitch.
The Item applauds not only the city for allowing the project to move forward, but most of all the members of the Leadership program for thinking of the community’s children.
