A representation of literary icon Mark Twain will grace the stage on Feb. 10 at the Ethel Holden Brownstone Center for the Arts at Pearl River Community College.

Performer Ron Jewell, who’s notorious for bringing Twain to life, will perform his theatrical show, Mark Twain at Large, at PRCC for two performances, Jewell’s assistant Paul Allen said.

At 11 a.m., Jewell will hold a workshop, where he will speak to PRCC students about Mark Twain, character development and life in theater. At 7 p.m., Jewell will slip into his Twain character and perform a 90 minute show.

“The show is basically about a group of people, the audience, ducking from a rain storm into Twain’s home in Stormfield, Connecticut. Twain, who’s portrayed in his 70’s, invites the audience into his study and begins to read a series of stories directly from Twain’s writing,” Allen said. “Some of it is autobiographical and some are tall tales.”

In a press release from PRCC, the performance is part of the PRCC Honors Lecture Series, which is funded by the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation through a grant to the Honors Institute.

Allen said Jewell has performed the show over the last 30 years in about 27 states.

“These days he’s more selective on where he performs, but he’s done well over 2,000 performances,” Allen said. “He’s also enjoyed freshening up the show over the years.”

When Jewell isn’t in his Twain suit, he serves as the director of the Performing Arts and Conference Center in Bartlett, Tennessee.
