A new water addition is coming soon to City Park in Poplarville.

On Wednesday, the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation and the Rotary Club of Poplarville donated a check for $59,113 to the city of Poplarville for the construction of a water play area in City Park, according to Poplarville Alderman Jason Pearson.

Pearson said City Park has been a success in the community, but it was time the city added a fun water feature for the local kids.

“Years ago we had a community pool, but not anymore. Recently, we’ve had a lot of requests for a water feature in the community, and a lot of people were excited for it, so we thought we should add a water feature to compliment what we already have in the park,” Pearson said.

Currently, Poplarville doesn’t have a water play area. Pearson said that’s because the city couldn’t afford to finance a water play area at the time. But he hopes families will opt to cool off from the summer heat in Poplarville once the project is complete.

According to a press release from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation, the new park amenity will be 1,250 square feet, and will include a variety of water features.

Sid Whitley, chief executive officer of the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation, said they were happy to contribute to the project.

“For one thing, we [foundation] try to do things that are for health and exercise. So this was something that was a joint effort between us and the Rotary Club of Poplarville,” Whitley said.

According to the press release, some of the funds came from grant money from the last of the Safe Harbor Funds.

The press release also stated that officials hope to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony sometime in the summer.
