This week, Nissan of Picayune will host two special events. The first is sure to delight college football fans and the second will bring Christmas cheer to needy children.
Once a year, an outstanding college football player is awarded the Heisman trophy.
According to Heisman.com, the Downtown Athletic Club awarded the first trophy at the conclusion of the 1935 football season. The trophy was renamed Heisman in 1936 after the death of player and coach, John W. Heisman.
The trophy is a symbol of collegiate football, prowess and competitiveness, the website states. The trophy portrays a football player sidestepping and straight-arming his way to a touchdown.
For the past week, this symbol of American athleticism has been on display at Nissan of Picayune and general manager Dan Crumpler would like to invite the public to a special viewing this evening.
“We were named one of the fastest growing dealerships in the district and we were given this opportunity to host the trophy,” Crumpler said. “It’s a chance for college football fans to view and touch the most coveted college award there is.”
This is the 80th year the trophy has been awarded to a player, Crumpler said. This year’s winner will be announced on Dec. 13 at 8 p.m.

Another famous icon will be making his way into Nissan of Picayune this week.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, for the third year in a row, Santa Claus will sit down and break bread with the children of Pearl River County.
Not only will the young people meet jolly old St. Nick, but they will also be helping children who are less fortunate.
Admission to the event is $4 and a new, unwrapped toy, Crumpler said. The toys will be donated to Toys for Tots.
According to toysfortots.org, the mission of the program is to collect toys during the months of October, November and December to distribute to less fortunate children in communities across the United States.
“This event brings awareness to Toys for Tots,” Crumpler said. “It’s one of the few charities where there’s no administration fees. Everything donated goes to a deserving child of some kind. It’s a great cause. The breakfast is a lot of fun and something I think everyone will enjoy.”
Loyalty rewards manager Tana Cochran said the event teaches children to give rather than receive.
Guests will feast on pancakes, sausage and juice, Cochran said.
There will be two seatings, one at 9 a.m. and the other at 10:15 a.m., Cochran said. Reservations are required and the last day to register is Friday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.
