Mississippi’s Attorney General Jim Hood announced on Wednesday the arrest of a Poplarville resident for the possession of child pornography.
On Tuesday, investigators with the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime unit arrested 55-year-old Jeffery A. Davis.
According to a press release from the Attorney General’s office, Davis was charged with one count of exploitation of a child for allegedly downloading child porn onto his computer.
He was booked into the Pearl River Detention Center and is awaiting a hearing, the release states. Davis’ bond was set at $20,000.
If convicted, Davis faces up to 40 years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.
As with all cases, the Attorney General would like to remind people that Davis is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
According to the 2013 Attorney General annual report, the Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Cyber Crime Unit was established in 2007. It is a multi-jurisdictional, multi-disciplinary agency covering 82 counties.
The unit is dedicated to proactive and reactive investigations, forensic analyses of electronic evidence, and prosecutions of technological crimes against children and the education of law enforcement and public, the report states.
During the 2013 fiscal year, the cyber crimes unit opened 108 new cases, had 10 convictions and the task force arrested 25 alleged offenders, the report states.
