J.W. Sones, 95, of the Sones Chapel Community peacefully passed into eternal life with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at his son’s residence.
Funeral services will be at SONES CHAPEL LANDMARK MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 11:00 am with Brother James McCraney and Brother Jesse Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at WHITE FUNERAL HOME, POPLARVILLE on Monday, November 24, 2014 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm; and one hour prior to services, Tuesday at the church.
A Pearl River County native, he was born March 21, 1919 to Leonard Kimbal Sones, Sr. and Martha Lumpkin Sones. A faithful husband; loving father and grandfather; he was a World War II US Army veteran; member of Sones Chapel Landmark Missionary Baptist Church; and retired from Pearl River Community College in Poplarville.
Survivors include three sons, Leonard David Sones, Sr. and his wife, Kimberly of the West Union Community, Jay Winston Sones, Brian Keith Sones, both of the Sones Chapel Community; four daughters, Melanie Sue Seals and husband Steve, Peggy Jo Rester, both of Sones Chapel Community, Rebecca Ann Roderick of Poplarvlle, Patsy Rae Sones of Colorado Springs, CO; one sister, Tressie Hartzel of Sones Chapel Community; thirteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Evelyn Rae Mitchell Sones; three brothers, Lloyd Sones, H.K. Sones, L.K. Sones, Jr.; four sisters, Ruby Scott, Wilmoth Wells, Opal Sharp, Mable Owens; one granddaughter, Jessica Sones; and one grandson, Richard Davis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sones Chapel Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, Cemetery Care Fund.
