Pearl River County’s unemployment rate in September fell to 30th in the state.
According to information released by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, Pearl River County’s unemployment rate for the month of September was 7.4 percent, which is an increase from August’s rate of 7.2 percent. Overall, the rate puts Pearl River County 30th on the unemployment list out of the state’s 82 counties. In September the county was ranked 23rd. A year ago in September the county’s unemployment rate was 8.4 percent.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Mississippi in September was 7.7 percent, a decrease from the previous month’s revised rate of 7.9 percent. In September of 2013 Mississippi’s adjusted unemployment rate was 8.4 percent.
Nationwide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September was 5.9 percent, a slight decrease from August’s revised rate of 6.1 percent.
A year ago in September the nationwide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.2 percent.
Seasonally adjusted rates factor in patterns such as weather, holidays, school schedules and other occurrences that regularly affect employment rates. Only nationwide and statewide percentages are adjusted.
Mississippi’s unadjusted rate for September was 7.3 percent, the report states. The state’s unadjusted revised rate for August was 7.4 percent.

Nationwide, the unadjusted unemployment rate in September was 5.7 percent, a decrease from August’s rate of 6.3 percent. In September of 2013 the unadjusted unemployment rate in the United States was 7 percent.
Of Mississippi’s 82 counties, 27 reported unemployment rates less than or equal to the statewide-unadjusted average of 7.3 percent. Rankin County reported the least amount of unemployment with 4.8 percent. Desoto County followed with a rate of 5.1 percent.
Clay County reported a population of the most unemployed with a rate of 15.1 percent while Noxubee County reported the second highest rate of 13.9 percent.
