The Poplarville School Board met for their regular scheduled meeting and approved an amendment to the 2013-2014 fiscal year budget and a number of general business items.
The budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year was $88,000 higher than projected, Superintendent Carl Merritt said. This means that the district received more funding than had originally been budgeted.
In other action, board members approved:
• A $500 grant for career technical education classes.
• Adoption of the Mississippi Common Core state standards. Yearly board approval of these standards is mandated by the state, Merritt said.
• Adoption of the Mississippi statewide teacher appraisal rubric regarding state mandated teacher evaluations.
• Holding the 2015 Poplarville High School graduation at Pearl River Community College’s M.R. White Coliseum. The coliseum seats about 3,000 and is handicapped accessible, Merritt said. The arena was damaged during Hurricane Katrina and now that it is repaired, it is available for the district’s use.
• Transfer of funds to cover shortfalls in other budgeted areas, Merritt said.
The next board meeting will be held on Nov. 10 at the Poplarville School Board room at 302 S. Julia St. at 6 p.m.
