After the Poplarville Board of Alderman heard feedback from Highlands Subdivision about annexation, the board continued discussions about downtown wireless Internet service and moving forward with making the park playground ADA compliant during Tuesday’s meeting.
At the Sept. 16 meeting, as reported in the Item, Mike Anderson with the Mississippi Broadband Projects furnished members with the particulars of adding wireless Internet to the city’s downtown area.
Anderson told the board at that meeting Internet service would entice more people downtown and would not interfere with the wireless services currently being offered by downtown businesses.
“The board voted to accept the lowest bid for the purchase of repeaters and other technology,” Board member Shirley Wiltshire said Friday. “Media 3, our local cable company, is working with the city to get this started. Wireless Internet will not only be offered downtown, but in city park as well. We hope to have it up and running by Christmas.”
Board members also discussed a question about a bid on installing ADA compliant playground equipment to be built at City Park, Wiltshire said.
“Back in the late 1990’s, the city was sued because some public facilities were not A.D.A. compliant,” Wiltshire said. “Upgrades were made to the sidewalks, City Hall and they are currently being added to the public library. The park is next on the list.”
Wiltshire said that a group of concerned citizens with disabled children had put together a list of equipment that they felt would be beneficial in the new playground.
“Right now, these parents drive to the Gulf Coast in order for their children to be able to play on a playground with special needs equipment,” Wiltshire said.
Wiltshire said the company that priced the new equipment didn’t include the items the parents suggested.
“The board is insisting on getting the equipment the parents requested,” Wiltshire said.
The next aldermen meeting is scheduled for Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. in City Hall.
