A pedestrian walking down Canal Street in Picayune was found to be in possession of a substance believed to be heroin.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Deina Woods of 42 Joseph Burk Rd., Carriere, was seen walking along East Canal Street near Miss. 43 South on Sept. 17 just after 2 p.m., said Picayune Police Department Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.
As the officer passed he noticed her gait to be unsteady, prompting him to stop and speak with her.
While speaking with Woods, the officer observed her speech to be slurred, eyes to be bloodshot and she was having trouble keeping her eyes open, Magri said.
The officer asked Woods to place her purse on the patrol vehicle, after which the officer noticed several syringes in plain view inside the purse, Magri said.
After retrieving the syringes from the purse, the officer noticed they contained an unknown liquid inside, Magri said. Other items found in the purse included a spoon with a burnt residue, half of a Xanax and a piece of a drinking straw, which is commonly used in the consumption of narcotics through the nasal cavity, Magri said.
As Woods was placed into custody the officer discovered a piece of aluminum foil on the ground where Woods was standing, which contained a brown powder like substance suspected to be heroin, Magri said.
After she was taken to the Criminal Justice Center a more thorough search of her bag found a plastic bag containing a white powder like substance that was sent to the crime lab for testing, the assistant chief said.
Magri said Woods was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and public drunk.
