Officers with the Picayune Police Department were involved in a high-speed chase Tuesday morning.

Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said the incident occurred Tuesday just after 10 a.m. when an officer on patrol saw the driver of a vehicle traveling on Highway 43 south not wearing a seatbelt and cut through the Race Trac parking lot.

The officer followed, witnessing the driver turn back onto Highway 43 south and accelerate at a high rate of speed in an attempt to elude arrest, Magri said.

As the driver continued to speed down the highway she swerved through both lanes of traffic, forcing several cars to leave the road to avoid an accident, Magri said.

The pursuit then turned down Salem Road, before heading down Moeller Road and then onto Timaguana Drive in the Round Rock Subdivision. The pursuit ended in the driveway of a home on Oak Drive, Magri said.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver, later identified as 40-year-old April Patterson of 217 Byrd St., Carriere, threw an object to the ground before attempting to flee on foot towards the wood line, Magri said.

Patterson was captured just before she reached the woods and taken into custody. Magri said the officer recovered the discarded item, which was a glass pipe with a burnt residue inside.

A check of her driver’s license determined it to be suspended and she was unable to provide proof of insurance, Magri said.

She was charged with failure to yield to blue lights and sirens, possession of paraphernalia, expired tag, driving while license suspended, no insurance, no seatbelt, speeding and resisting arrest by fleeing, Magri said.

Patterson was also wanted by the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department for credit card fraud, Magri said.
