Use caution when purchasing items from Craig’s List

County and city law enforcement agencies have reported a rash of armed robberies have occurred associated with attempting to make purchases through Craig’s List, a popular place for people to list items they would like to sell, or buy.

While finding items online can be a way to save money, and locate those hard to find goods, there are some precautions people should take.

If you are the buyer and the item is mobile, have the seller meet you in a public place. It might also be a good idea to bring a friend or two along for the ride.

Friends can not only provide their opinion on whether the item is worth the asking price, but also ensure your safety in the event the seller had an ulterior motive.

Local law enforcement agencies are working a case where an individual was interested in purchasing a motorcycle, and was lured to the rear of a private home and robbed at gunpoint of the cash he brought.

This is where meeting in a public place and bringing a friend could have prevented this crime.

If for some reason the seller refuses to meet in public or allow you to bring a friend, you should consider purchasing your item elsewhere.

If you are selling an item, it would also be wise to meet the buyer in a public place. Bringing them to your home is not recommended; not only would they know where you live, they would most likely take note of the valuables in your home.

Attempt to protect your identity when using any online shopping site where one-on-one interaction is involved. Avoid using a personal email address, or providing direct contact information.

Craig’s list offers an email service, which provides one layer of protection.

So as you check the online listings for items, keep in mind that your life is worth more than any material possession.
