New QB’s this season

THIBODAUX, La. — It seems only fitting that one of the most prestigious passing camps in the nation just wrapped up within short driving distance of Pearl River County.

That’s because all three local prep football teams will employ new quarterbacks this coming season.

Picayune, Pearl River Central and Poplarville will all be looking to replace successful signal-callers from last year.

Picayune’s Boderick Scott only played one year for the Maroon Tide, but all he did was guide head coach Dodd Lee’s team to the Class 5A state championship in his lone season running the show.

In Poplarville, new Hornet head coach Jay Beech must replace two year starter Chandler Ray who helped guide his team to the Class 4A state playoffs the past two seasons.

And in Carriere, Pearl River Central head coach Eric Collins has the daunting task of replacing a four year starter, which is a rarity in high school football especially at the all important quarterback spot.

Dylan Spiers started behind center for the past four years for the Blue Devils, and now Collins will turn to Tyreke Whitehead.

“He’s been a part of our team for the past few years, and was a back-up at times to Dylan,” Collins, entering his fifth year at the helm of the Blue Devils, said. “He played safety for us last year, but saw some time at quarterback the year before.

“I think he’s going to turn some heads and open some eyes this season. He’s a senior, and now it’s his turn to step up for us.”
