Today marks the beginning of Mississippi’s sales tax holiday.

The event started at 12:01 a.m. today and will last until midnight Saturday.

Shoppers can save 7 percent on certain clothes and shoes that cost $100 or less per item. While individual items can’t cost more than $100 each to qualify for the tax break, shoppers have no limits on how much they can spend, the Associated Press reported.

Picayune retailers will be participating in the event.

Cato’s manager Kristen Phillips said most of their shoes and clothing will be tax-free.

Phillips said her store also offers clothing that is similar to school uniforms.

Bre’s Clothing and Accessories, Stage and Wal-Mart will also be participating in the event.

Wal-Mart also has school uniform apparel in stock, store manager Robert Colombel said.

Apple’s Limited and Factory Connection in Poplarville will be participating as well.

According to the Department of Revenue’s website, accessories such as jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches, backpacks and similar items do not qualify.

Cleats and items worn in conjunction with an athletic or recreational activity are not eligible.

The three cities choosing not to participate are Enterprise, Heidelberg and Crenshaw, the website states. Every other city will participate, including Picayune and Poplarville.

All retail businesses within the corporate limits of the municipality not participating must charge and remit the sales tax on all sales that would normally be exempt under the sales tax holiday, the Department of Revenue’s website states.
