A train derailed early Wednesday morning outside of Lumberton on the Lamar and Pearl River County line. 

Pearl River County Emergency Operations Center Public Affairs Officer Tony Bounds said the northbound train was pulling 10 rail cars at the time of the accident, all of which were empty except one that was carrying automobiles.

The derailed train could be seen near Lumberton’s Industrial Park, but no major roads appeared to affected. According to a statement from the PRCEOC office, Red Top Road is closed at the intersection of Lavelle Ladner Road until the cleanup and track repair work can be completed.

Crews were out Wednesday morning using heavy equipment to right and remove the derailed cars.

Bounds said the accident occurred Wednesday at about 4 a.m.

No vehicles traveling the roadways were involved, but the engineer of the train was injured.

Bounds said the extent of the engineer’s injuries are currently unknown, but he was transported to Forrest General Hospital for treatment.

The Associated Press reports the engineer’s injuries were minor and that cleanup of the accident and track repair is expected to take between 36 to 48 hours.

Trains in Lumberton and Picayune could be seen parked on tracks due to the accident, which prevented further rail travel.

Bounds said the cause of the accident is currently unknown, but is under investigation by Lamar County emergency personnel.
