Summer safety tips and fun activities can be had at the second annual Highland Community Hospital Summer Safety Fair.

The event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Emergency Room parking lot, said Director of Emergency Services Robin Monpalbano.

She said the event is called “Time out for Kids” and aims to inform parents and children about the most effective ways to stay safe while enjoying summer activities.

“We call it Time out for Kids because during this three hours it’s all about children and their safety,” Monpalbano said.

During the event, children can have their face painted, enjoy some cotton candy and lemonade, get a balloon and view a number of emergency response vehicles. Monpalbano said they plan to have an ambulance, fire truck and Rescue 7 at the event, weather permitting.

“Last year the kids had a ball because they were allowed to climb on it,” Monpalbano said of the rescue helicopter.

A K-9 demonstration by the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department is also planned.

Last year the event drew in about 100 kids, this year Monpalbano hopes even more attend.

To help with safety demonstrations Hospital Administrator Mark Stockstill will bring his boat. An ATV will also be on hand, Monpalbano said.

The event is free and attendees can register to win one of five free bikes or helmets. Monpalbano said winners are not required to be present at the time of the drawing to collect their prize.
