Poplarville begins sale of alcohol for first time in the city’s history

ALCOHOL IN POPLARVILLE: A Poplarville resident takes advantage of the newly legalized beer and light wine availability at Keith’s Superstore in Poplarville.

On  June 1 the legal sale of beer and light wine began for the first time in the history of Poplarville.

Before reaching this milestone, the Board of Aldermen and mayor worked closely with the public to ensure concerns were addressed.

City Attorney Martin Smith said, to date, 11 licenses have been approved and he has heard nothing but positive reports from the general public.

Poplarville Alderman Jason Pierce said the board expects more restaurants to apply in the near future.

“The first day was a huge success for sales. It seemed like product was flying off the shelves. I think the novelty of the day was the biggest factor,” Pearson said. “I had people tell me that it was a historic happening and they wanted a souvenir to keep.”

Pearson said he can’t predict if the first few day’s pace will continue, but he can say that it seems to be a positive move for local merchants. In addition, residents who want the convenience of being able to purchase beer and light wine within the city limits.

Poplarville Police Chief Charlie Fazende said there has been no known increase in crime or D.U.I.’s since the change took effect.

Retailers report a smooth transition and an increase in sales.

Keelan Jones, manager of Ramey’s, located at 935 S. Main St, in Poplarville, said the business has experienced an increase in sales so far and customers seem excited about the availability of alcohol in the city.

Shannon Boell, an employee at Circle D Convenience Store, located at 648 Highway 26 E, in Poplarville, said she has not encountered any problems so far and sales are relatively steady.

Logans One Stop, which is located at 105 Highway 11 S, employee Alex Sayeed said the store has experienced a noticeable increase in sales.
