The Pearl River Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into possible methamphetamine production after discovering methamphetamine residue on a coffee filter during a traffic stop, said Sheriff David Allison.

Allison said on May 4, deputies observed a vehicle being operated carelessly traveling north on U.S. Highway 11.

When deputies pulled the vehicle over, the driver, who was later identified as Michael U. Stevenson, 37, 120 Thomas Stockstill Rd. in Picayune, couldn’t produce proof of insurance, Allison said.

After Stevenson was arrested for careless driving and no insurance, deputies conducted a search of his vehicle. The search uncovered a coffee filter filled with a white powder residue, Allison said.

He said deputies conducted a field test on the residue and it was positive for methamphetamine.

Stevenson was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, careless driving and no proof of insurance, Allison said.

He said the sheriff department is investigating whether Stevenson is involved in the manufacturing of the drug.
