This Sunday is Mother’s Day, a day to honor the one who not only brought you into this world, but ensured you had the best possible start in life.

Modern Mother’s Day began more than a century ago as a way for people to honor their mother.

The push to have Mother’s Day recognized as it is today did not start until the early twentieth century, and was initiated by Anna Jarvis as a way to honor the memory of her deceased mother.

The second Sunday in May continues as a designated day to show mothers that their efforts to keep faces clean, stomachs full and children get home safe are appreciated. It is a day, in addition to her birthday, that you show her you value all the sacrifice she put in to raising you.

There are many ways to show your mother you appreciate her, even if you are not able to provide her with expensive gifts.

In fact, most mothers would prefer gifts that can’t be purchased with money, but instead were the product of your own creativity. You may remember that as a child the crafts made with love said more to your mother than any commercial gift could ever convey. Every son and daughter has brought home a craft that was made with their mother in mind. Typically such creations were displayed with pride in a prominent location.

But as an adult, options could include preparing your mother a home cooked meal, creating a unique item she can use on a daily basis or just spending time with her.

Alternately you can take her to a movie, buy her dinner at her favorite restaurant or maybe wash her car.

The point is to make your mother feel special this Sunday. So don’t forget, Sunday is Mother’s Day.
