ST. MARTIN — The first of two days of prep basketball all-star action got underway Thursday night.

A player that Picayune fans are familiar with, West Harrison’s Harvey Smart, tallied a game high 23 points to lead the Home team to a 107-96 win over the away team in the underclassmen contest Thursday in the South Mississippi All-Stars Showcase.

Stacee St. Julian of St. Martin scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to earn the MVP award while Smart put up a game-high 23 points at the St. Martin High School gymnasium.

“It’s an all-star game.,” St. Martin head coach and event organizer Charlie Pavlus said. “We’ve got people trying to do too much periodically throughout the game. Once we started guarding, getting turnovers and getting layups, the game got easy.”

Hattiesburg forward Tristan Walley led the Away squad with 20 points. Jashire Hardnett, a junior for the Class 6A state champion Gulfport Admirals, added 19 points.

St. Martin’s Rodrick Sikes had six points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Home team and Jerrod Rigby of St. Stanislaus had 17 points.

The West beat the East in the girls underclassmen game with Hattiesburg’s Shantavis Hughes leading the West with a game-high 18 points on six 3-pointers.

The East was led by Gulfport’s Obadiah Montgomery, who worked well in the paint with 16 points.

Sophomore forward Ameshya Williams contributed 11 points in the post for the West.

The girls and boys seniors games will start at 6 p.m. tonight at St. Martin with Moss Point’s Devin Booker and St. Martin’s Ed Simpson highlighting the boys roster and Christa Reed leading the way for the girls.

Booker has signed with Kentucky, Simpson with Middle Tennesse State and Reed with Vanderbilt.

Picayune’s Donovan Rice will suit up for the West Seniors team and Maroon Tide head coach Scott Stephens will be an assistant coach for that team.
