Crosby Arboretum Director Pat Drackett invites anyone interested in learning about native plants to the field walk which will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on May 31. The walk will feature Herbarium Curator and Associate Professor Dr. Mac Alford, of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Drackett describes Alford as an exceptionally knowledgeable professor, whose expertise in wildflowers and grasses will delight those who attend.

“He is literally like a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and we are very lucky to have access to him during this walk,” Drackett said. “He will speak about wildflowers but also make points about the grass which typically serves as a backdrop for everything else in nature. He will bring these topics to life.”

Drackett said that Alford is one of the most popular professors because of the lively way he communicates his knowledge.

“He is the perfect guide to take novice and master gardeners alike through our exhibits,” she said.

She said Alford will give a short introduction on subjects of plant taxonomy and ecology prior to moving the group outdoors for the walk.

She said the walk will be an easy one with many opportunities to pause and engage Alford about interesting plants at the Arboretum.

Members can attend the program free of charge, non-members are asked to pay a nominal fee of $5. For additional information or to register for the walk call (601) 799-2311.

To arrive at the Arboretum take Exit 4 from Interstate 59 and follow the signage.
