Yes, Pearl River Central still has a baseball team. The Blue Devils just haven’t had many chances to prove it over the past couple of weeks.

 

Head coach Neil Walther’s squad is slated to return to the diamond today, traveling to Brookhaven for an important Region 6-5A contest.

 

The weather forecast isn’t very promising however, continuing a recent trend for the Blue Devils. Walther’s team has only played one game in the past two weeks due to different circumstances, mainly weather.

 

“I don’t know what we will do if we get rained out again (against Brookhaven),” Walther, in his fifth year at the helm of the Blue Devils, said. “I mean we are scheduled to play them twice coming up in two weeks, so we might be able to add another one in that week. But that would be up to them.”

 

The Blue Devils are off to an impressive start, standing 11-3 overall and 3-0 in league play. Despite the recent down time, PRC is scheduled to play five games over the next four days, weather permitting of course.

 

The Blue Devils head to Brookhaven today, and then travel to Poplarville for a doubleheader against the Hornets Saturday afternoon. Then, on Monday, Jackson Wingfield is slated to come calling in Carriere for a region doubleheader that was originally scheduled for last Friday but, of course, rained out.

 

“A layoff like this definitely effects you,” Walther added. “I mean you go two weeks without seeing live pitching and you’re not in game situations, and you can’t reproduce that stuff in practice. You can only keep working and try and stay as sharp as possible.”

 

Brookhaven is also unbeaten in the region, standing 2-0 and the Panthers are 8-8 overall. Brookhaven has played six games in the past two weeks, while PRC has only a win eight days ago over Ben’s Ford Academy from Louisiana to its credit.

 

Pearl River Central and Brookhaven are slated to meet two more times, on Tuesday, April 15th and Thursday, April 17th. The Panthers also have a game scheduled with neighborhood rival Bogue Chitto on Good Friday, April 18th.

 

 

“We’ve only played 14 games, so we just need to get back on the field,” Walther concluded. “We just have to stay focused until that happens.”
