The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department arrested a suspect for residential burglary after the resident of the home was able to detain the suspect, said Chief Deputy Shane Tucker.

Tucker said deputies responded to a burglary call on March 21 at 3 a.m. on the 300 block of J.J. Holcomb Road. He said at about that time the teenage daughter awoke in the middle of the night to find a man searching through her bedroom with a cigarette lighter for light.

Tucker said the girl was able to escape to her brother’s bedroom, where contacted her mother, who was in another bedroom, via text message to tell her about the intruder. He said after the mother received the text message and told the stepfather about the intruder. The stepfather then got up and found John T. Palmer III, 34, of 319 Anchor Lake Rd. searching around the living room with a cigarette lighter.

Tucker said the stepfather “used extreme restraint and was able to manhandle the suspect and keep him detained,” until deputies arrived.

Tucker said “everything fortunately worked out extremely well” and no was injured.

After Palmer was taken into custody, deputies found his vehicle parked nearby, Tucker said.

Palmer was arrested for residential burglary and is currently being held at Pearl River County Detention Facility, Tucker said.

According to Poplarville Police Department records, Palmer was also arrested on March 1 in Poplarville for DUI first offense, driving with a suspended license and having no insurance.
