Last week, a Carriere man was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender.

According to a release from the 15th District Attorney’s Office, Donald Allen Caves of Carriere was found guilty by a jury of his peers for the charge of failure to register as a sex offender.

Fifteenth District Attorney Hal Kittrell said the charge stemmed from Caves moving to a new address within the county and not registering his change of address.

While the move was within the same county, Kittrell said sex offenders are still required to register a change in address, no matter the distance.

“I don’t care if it’s next door… you still got to keep tabs on them,” Kittrell said.

Sentencing for Caves is set for Thursday of this week. While the typical sentence for a failure to register as a sex offender conviction is five years, Kittrell said he will make a motion for Judge Anthony Mozingo to classify Caves as a habitual offender and, if approved, could mean Caves would be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Jail terms are determined by the judge.

Kittrell will make the motion to convict Caves as a habitual offender based on his convictions of child molestation in 1990, grand larceny and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, all of which occurred in Pearl River County, Kittrell said.

“We are pleased with the conviction in this case. The people in Pearl River County have a right to know where sex offenders like Donald Caves reside,” said Kittrell.
