It wasn’t a good week for the Picayune softball team.

 

The Lady Tide dropped their fifth straight game Tuesday night, four of those coming over the past seven days, as homestanding Long Beach topped Picayune 3-1 in Region 7-5A action.

 

The loss leaves Picayune at 0-3 in league play, with all of those losses coming within the past week. The Lady Tide stands 4-13-1 overall.

 

Picayune managed just one hit against Long Beach pitcher Krystal Goodman. Lady Tide pitcher Elizabeth Taggard scattered four hits in going the distance and taking the loss.

 

On Monday, Jay Harris homered and drove in three runs as St. Martin topped visiting Picayune 8-3 in non-region play.

 

Harris, Katelyn Gruich, Keelee Ladnier and Victoria Romero all had two hits for the Yellow Jackets, who are now 11-4-1. Romero also drove in two runs.

 

Janna Jamieson got the victory for St. Martin, allowing two hits and one earned run in seven innings.

 

Rylee Dawsey drove in a run for Picayune, as the Lady Tide managed just four hits. Picayune led 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, before St. Martin rallied for six runs to take control and eventually seal the win.

 

Picayune will try and snap its losing streak at the Harrison Central Tournament on Saturday.

 

• In other prep softball action of local interest, West Harrison beat Stone County 2-1 in Region 7-5A play.

 

Jackie Shows and Stephanie Necaise combined on a three-hitter and 14 strikeouts for the Lady Hurricanes (9-7, 2-0 Division 7-5A). Ashlyn Raffeo had two hits.

 

Stone County dropped to 211 in league play. The Lady ‘Cats meet Long Beach tonight in league play before traveling to Picayune in district play Tuesday.

 

Also, Harrison Central beat Hancock 7-0 Tuesday.

 

Madison Burge struck out eight and allowed two hits as the Red Rebelettes (10-3) won their Division 7-6A opener. Natalie Hogue hit a two-run double. Desiree Lindsey had three hits. Kimberly Gilbert had two hits, including a homer.
