Two adults and an infant died in a residential fire that occurred early Saturday morning.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the fire at 1:08 a.m. Saturday at a home located at 708 Bennett Street, said Picayune Police Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.

Picayune Police officers and Picayune Fire Department firefighters arrived on scene to find the home engulfed in flames. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, Magri said.

Magri said once the flames were extinguished a check of the home was conducted where three bodies were found lying in different locations on the floor of a bedroom. EMT personnel and the coroner pronounced all three occupants dead on the scene.

Deceased are 65-year-old Edward Parker of 708 Bennett St., 29-year-old Nancy Cooper of 1007 Merrydale Dr., and six-month-old Jeremiah Parker-Cooper of 708 Bennett St., Magri said.

Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said an autopsy was conducted Saturday, which determined the cause of death to be smoke inhalation. Foul play is not suspected, Turnage said.

Initial investigation into the cause of fire determined a pan was left on a lit kitchen stove.

Picayune Fire Marshal Pat Weaver said he and the state fire marshal investigated the home Saturday to confirm the cause of the fire.

During their inspection they found the stove was in the “on” position and a pan had melted to the burner.

Weaver said the house did not have smoke detectors.
