Despite a pair of outstanding performances on the mound, It wasn’t a good night at the plate for a pair of Pearl River County baseball teams Tuesday night.

 

Picayune wasted an outstanding performance on the hill by Peyton Lee, and Poplarville did the same with a impressive outing from Blake Ladner as both the Maroon Tide and Hornets fell in district action.

 

Visiting Stone County scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning, coming away with a 3-0 win over Picayune in Region 7-5A play.

 

Meanwhile, homestanding St. Stanislaus pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, and took a 1-0 win over Poplarville in Region 8-4A action.

 

In Picayune, Lee hurled seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Mark Wood relieved in the eighth and took the loss, as the Tomcats pushed across the trio of runs thanks to a walk, a pair of Picayune errors and a base hit.

 

Lee led off the bottom of the final frame with a double, but was stranded at third to end the game. That would be a theme all night for the Maroon Tide, as they left 11 runners on base without scoring.

 

Morgan Dagon had three singles for Picayune. Riley Hill picked up the win in relief of Tyler Spring for Stone.

 

Picayune falls to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in league play, while Stone moves into sole possession of first place in the region with a 4-1 mark and the Tomcats are 7-7 overall. Picayune is tied with Long Beach for second, while West Harrison is in last place in the league race at 0-5.

 

The two teams will meet again tonight in Wiggins at 6 p.m., in a game that was originally slated for Friday night.

 

• In Bay St. Louis, Poplarvile and SSC locked up in a pitchers duel as well with Ladner matching up with Greer Holston. Each pitcher went the distance, and both allowed just two hits. Ladner struck out nine and Holsten struck out eight in the contest.

 

Destin Aime of St. Stanislaus was credited with the only RBI of the game, when his ground ball was misplayed by the Hornets and resulted in Irby Dossett scoring the game-winning run.

 

Luke Goodwin and Justin Oliver each had doubles for Poplarville.

 

The win gives the Rocks a solid hold on first place in the league, as they move to 5-0 in the district and 11-4 overall. The Hornets are 7-7 overall and drop to 3-2 in league play. Vancleave moved into second place in the league standings at 4-1 with a win over Moss Point Tuesday night.

 

The same two teams are scheduled to meet Friday in Poplarville.
