The Picayune softball team begins a key six day stretch tonight.

The Lady Tide stands 0-3 after the first round of play in Region 7-5A action, and after getting rained out Tuesday night against Stone County Picayune will begin the second round of league play hosting Long Beach at 7 p.m.

Picayune is 4-14-1 overall.

“We have played well at times, but we just haven’t been able to put all three phases of the game together at one time,” veteran Lady Tide mentor Kristi Mitchell said. “At times we pitch well, but we don’t play defense or hit. Sometimes we hit the ball really well, but our pitching isn’t where we need to be. And sometimes we hit and pitch well enough, but our fielding lets us down. A lot of that comes from being young, but I think we can overcome that. We haven’t been as successful as we’d like so far record-wise, but all of our goals are still in front of us.”

Picayune was supposed to host Stone County in league play Tuesday night, but inclement weather caused the game to be postponed until Monday. That makes the district schedule shake out like this the rest of the way; host Long Beach tonight, host Stone Monday and travel to West Harrison Tuesday.

The Lady Tide currently sits in fourth place in the league standings, and only three teams from the league make the state playoffs. West Harrison and Long Beach are both 2-0, and were slated to meet Wednesday night. Stone County sits 1-2. All three beat Picayune in the first go around of league play.

“A lot of it is still up in the air, but we definitely have to start winning some games,” Mitchell added. “ I am hoping a win against Long Beach and then a few wins over the weekend will set us up for some success next week and we can get right back into things.”

After tonight’s game, Picayune will travel to North Pike for a tournament on Saturday where the Lady Tide will face Class 6A powers Brandon and Harrison Central as well as the host team North Pike.
