MOSS POINT — A different destination translated into the same result for Poplarville.

The Lady Hornets traveled to Moss Point for just the second time in a decade, but came away with yet another Region 8-4A title

Poplarville pulled out an exciting 12-11 win in eight innings over the homestanding Lady Tigers Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Lady Hornets to a perfect 8-0 in league play and sealed the league title for Poplarville as well. It’s the sixth district title in the past seven years for Poplarville.

It was also the second close extra innings win over Moss Point in the past two weeks, after the Lady Hornets beat the Lady Tigers 10-9 at home.

“It’s always one of our goals each season, to win the district,” veteran Lady Hornet head coach Jonathan Ray, whose team stands an impressive 17-1-1 overall, said. “It’s nice to win it again, but we still have a lot of work to do. We don’t want to be satisfied by just winning the district.”

The Lady Hornets got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. They added one in the second and three more in the third, to take an 8-2 lead.

Poplarville seemed in control, extending its advantage to 10-2 with two more runs in the top of the fifth. But Moss Point wasn’t done, as the Lady Tigers used the homefield advantage to rally for five runs in the bottom of the fifth

Moss Point tied the game up at 10-10 in the bottom of the sixth, and after a scoreless seventh the teams went in to the extra session where Poplarville won it with two runs in the top of the eighth.

Maryah Davis paced the winning 13 hit attack with three hits, including a triple and a double. She also drove in two runs. Kaley Lambert had a pair of hits, including a home run, and three runs batted in.

Camryn Pierce also drove in three runs, with a pair of hits including a double. Shelbie Wheat also had a pair of hits, including a double, while  Madison Nodturft also had two hits and a pair of RBI’s. Drew Smith also drove in a run in the winning effort.

Pierce went the distance to pick up the pitching win.

The state playoffs begin next week, but Poplarville will have a first round bye.
