A former city of Picayune Public Works employee was indicted Thursday in Pearl River County for one felony count of false statements and representations and one felony count of false pretenses.

Gregory Kerr, 48, was a part-time employee for the city of Picayune, said City Manager Jim Luke.

According to a press release from the State Auditor’s office, Kerr falsified his time records and received payment for work that he didn’t provide between April and July 2012.

Public Works Director Eric Morris said he couldn’t discuss the details of Kerr’s employment or termination, but confirmed Kerr’s employment was terminated on July 2, 2012.

Morris said after Kerr was terminated by the city, he turned over the information the city gathered on Kerr to the State Auditor’s office for further investigation.

Communications Director for the Office of the State Auditor Brett Kittredge said the state auditor’s investigation began after they received a complaint about Kerr submitting fraudulent claims to the city of Picayune.

According to the indictment, Kerr defrauded the city out of $868.80.

The city classifies a part-time employee as someone who works less than 19.5 hours a week, Luke said.

“It’s really a crime against the taxpayers,” Luke said.

Kerr was arrested on Monday and taken to the Pearl River County Detention facility. According to Kerr’s indictment, his bail was set at $15,000.
