POPLARVILLE — The playoff scenario for the Poplarville baseball team should be settled over the next week or so.

The Hornets currently sit tied for third with Pass Christian in Region 8-4A action, and the team they are knotted up with, Pass Christian, they split two games with earlier in the year.

St. Stanislaus leads the district at 6-0, while Vancleave sits 5-1. Both Poplarville and the Pirates are 3-3, while Bay High is 1-5 and Moss Point is still looking for its first win at 0-6.

Poplarville hosts Bay High tonight, and then travels to the Bay Friday night after Tuesday’s game was rained out and moved to tonight. St. Stanislaus and Vancleave played Wednesday night, and then meet again Friday night. Vancleave and Poplarville then meet twice next week. Pass Christian, on the other hand, has a pair of games with Moss Point this week and then faces SSC twice next week.

And only three teams can qualify for the Class 4A South State playoffs….got it?

“I think we need to win at least three of the four to have a chance,” Poplarville interim head coach Lance Hendrix said Tuesday night. “I mean with a sweep we might even get second place, and we could even make it by splitting the four games with tie-breakers. But anything less than that won’t work for us.”

The Hornets had a couple of shots at handing the league leading Rockachaws their first region loss last week, but came up short twice in a pair of 1-0 losses. St. Stanislaus won each game on a single unearned run.

“It was two tough losses, and we had our chances,” Hendrix added. “We really wanted to at least get a split, but we just couldn’t come away with a win in either game.”

The Poplarville-Bay High game was the only one in the region that was moved to tonight after all three were postponed Tuesday night. St. Stanislaus was slated to meet Vancleave Wednesday night and Moss Point and Pass Christain was moved back a day as well.

• Also tonight, Picayune will host Long Beach at 6 p.m. The game was rained out on Tuesday.

Picayune, Long Beach and Stone County are all tied up at 4-2 in Region 7-5A play.

The Stone-West Harrison game was also ranied out Tuesday night, and has been moved to Monday. Picayune meets hosts WHHS Friday.
