SUMMIT — There were a few familiar faces in the Southwest Community College dugout awaiting visiting Pearl River on Wednesday.

Five local products are members of the Bears baseball team. PRCC pulled off a 2-0, 11-inning marathon victory over Southwest Mississippi in the first game of an MACJC South Division doubleheadre, but the host Bears bounced back with an 8-6 win in the nightcap game.

PRCC is now 16-12 overall and 3-5 in division play, while SMCC is 11-13 and 5-5.

Four players that played prep ball in Pearl River County are on the Southwest roster. Picayune’s J.D. Stockstill and Caleb Crumpler, along with Pearl River Central’s Trey Wynn and Poplarville’s Jade Whitten are all part of the Bears team.

In the opening game, the two teams battled through 10 scoreless innings until the Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the 11th to take the hard-fought victory.

In the 11th, River lead off batter Kyle Dolan of Forrest County AHS reached after getting belted by a pitch by reliever Brady Badon and moved to second off a sacrifice by Jacob Taylor of Picayune High before scoring off a double by Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High.

Haskin moved to third off a fly out by Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High then Justin Demary of Iowa (La.) High was hit by a pitch, stole second, and Haskin scored off a single by Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High. The Bears left two runners stranded in the bottom of the frame — both hit by pitches — with reliever Demary retiring Patric Devlin for the final out.

Demary (1-1) picked up the win after relieving in the ninth, pitching the final two-and-a-third innings, giving up a hit, and walking a batter. Starter Philip Chandler of Stone County High went five frames, gave up three hits, struck out three, and walked one, while Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High pitched one-and-two-thirds of relief, striking out three. Luke McGee, a Ohio State transfer who prepped at Wooster (Oh.) High, relieved for one-and-a-third, giving up a hit, striking out one, and walking one, while Taylor pitched two-thirds of an inning, recording a strike out. Badon (2-1) got the loss.

Haskin paced the Wildcats’ eight-hit attack with three singles (one RBI), while Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High doubled and single, Anthony had two base hits (one RBI),.

The Bears finished with four hits, all singles.

In the nightcap, an Austin Knight single past second base drove Logan Ferrell to the plate to put the Bears on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bears then sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the second and scored six times to take a 7-0 lead. Catcher Trent Gordy had a double and RBI single in the inning. Courtesy runner Sam Richard, on base for Gordy, scored on a Patric Devlin ground out. Kendric Hodges drove in a pair of runs with a double to right while Anthony Durr and Trey Wynn both had run-producing hits in the inning.

The Wildcats made it interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits and a walk. But, with a runner on base, Southwest relievers Jade Whitten and J. D. Stockstill combined to strike out the final three batters and preserve the victory.

Chase Ladd gave up four runs on five hits in three innings on the mound to record the win for the Bears. He struck out one and walked three. Stockstill struck out both batters he faced to pick up the save. Whitten struck out one.

Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High (1-1) got the loss.

Mount led the Wildcats’ eight-hit effort with two doubles (two RBIs), while Darien Brown doubled and singled, Nathan Pugh had two base hits (two RBIs).

The Bears finished with 10 hits, led by Trent Gordy with a double and a single (one RBI).

PRCC and SMCC eye a South Division rematch set for Friday, April 18 (2 p.m. doubleheader) in Wildcat Stadium in Poplarville.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday when South Division foe Hinds plays host with a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Raymond before returning home to host division rival Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday with a 4 p.m. twin bill.
