Wildcats get swept by visiting Illinois Central

POPLARVILLE — Sunday wasn’t a fun day for Pearl River Community College.

Visiting Illinois Central College swept a doubleheader here at Wildcat Stadium from the Wildcats, taking a pair of one run wins.

The visiting Cougars out of East Peoria, Ill., took a 6-5 victory in the opening game before winning 9-7 in the nightcap to see PRCC drop to 11-7 overall.

In the first game, The River went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first, while ICC scored a solo run in the top of the second before taking a 4-2 lead in the fourth. The Wildcats tied it up in the bottom of the frame, but the Cougars retaliated with two in the sixth. PRCC scored the game’s final run in the seventh.

Cougar Skyler Arnberger got the win in his four innings on the mound, giving up seven hits, striking out five, and walking one, while Mike Hainline saw two-and-two-thirds innings of relief duty, giving up two hits, striking out one and walking one. Andy Christensen pitched the last out.

Reliever Justin Demary of Iowa (La.) High (0-1) got the loss, pitching two-and-a-third, giving up four hits, striking out three, and walking one. Starter Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High pitched three-and-a-third, giving up four hits, striking out three, and walking one, while Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High relieved for one-and-a-third, striking out two, and LeDarien Lee of Forrest County AHS walked a batter.

Brad Burton paced the Cougar’s eight-hit effort with a double and a single (two RBIs), while Morgan Depew doubled and Jacob Hargis, Patrick Jarvis (one RBI), Jaren Linton (two RBIs).

Pearl River finished with nine hits, led by Houston Davenport out of Thompson High in Birmingham, Ala., with a double and a single (two RBIs), while Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High and Nathan Pugh of Starkville High had two singles each. Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High doubled and Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson (one RBI) and Jacob Taylor of Picayune High both had base hits.

In the nightcap, things were scoreless for the first three innings before Illinois Central scored three runs in top of the fourth, fifth, and sixth to burst out to a 9-0 lead. PRCC scored three in the bottom of the sixth and four in the seventh only to come up three shy of victory.

ICC starter Blake Uhlman got the win in his six innings of action, giving up six hits and striking out six.

Starter Brandon Pennington of Sumrall High (2-1) got the loss in his four innings on the mound, giving up six hits and striking out six, while Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High pitched one-and-two-thirds of relief, giving up a hit, striking out two, and walking one. Adam Turney out of Oak Hill Academy in West Point picked a third of an inning, while Blake Weyenberg of Poplarville High pitching one frame.

Meyer led the Cougars with a double and a single (one RBI), while Matt Halliday had two base hits (two RBIs).

Pugh paced the Wildcats with a homer and a double (four RBIs), while Johnson homered (two RBIs), Derek Martin of Poplarville High doubled, and Lamar Anthony of Vicksburg High, Garren Berry of Petal High, Brown, and Davenport all had base hits.

Pearl River returns to action today when it travels to MACJC South Division rival Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson for a 4 p.m. doubleheader before hosting division rival Jones County Saturday for a 2 p.m. twin bill.
