The Mississippi Board of Education rejected requests from 34 school districts to forgive school days missed due to January’s winter storms.

Pearl River County School District and Poplarville School District both have plans to make up the three days students missed in January due to icy weather creating dangerous traveling conditions.

Poplarville School District Superintendent Carl Merritt said the students already made up one of the missed days on Monday.

Students were originally scheduled to be off for the Mardi Gras holidays.

Merritt said the other two make up days would be April 21, the day after Easter, and May 23.

Pearl River County School District Superintendent Alan Lumpkin said he would make the recommendation for the make up dates at the school board meeting on Thursday night.

Lumpkin said, pending board approval, three days would be added to the end of the school year to make up for the days missed during the storm.

Originally, the last day of school for students would have been May 22 and will instead be pushed back to May 28, Lumpkin said.

He said teachers’ last day would be May 29 instead of May 23.

According to a survey by the Mississippi Department of Education, at least 130 of the state’s 151 school districts missed some days because of winter weather.
